Honored for Decades of Dedication to Governance, Democracy, and National Development

Former Governor of Katsina State, Rt Hon Aminu Bello Masari, has been conferred with a Lifetime Achievement Award by THISDAY Newspaper/Arise TV during the 2025 THISDAY Awards held at Eko Hotel, Lagos, on Monday, January 27. The award recognizes his enduring contributions to Nigerian politics, governance, and democratic consolidation.

Masari, who currently serves as Chairman of the Board of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), has had a distinguished career spanning decades in public service. His journey in governance began in 1991 when he was appointed Commissioner for Works, Housing, and Transport in Katsina State, a role he held until 1993. His political influence expanded nationally when he became Speaker of the House of Representatives (2003–2007) under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he played a key role in legislative reforms and the protection of Nigeria’s democratic principles.

Pivotal Role in Nigeria’s Political Landscape

Masari's impact in Nigerian politics is widely acknowledged, particularly for his role in the formation and rise of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was instrumental in the party’s historic victory in the 2015 presidential election, which led to the defeat of an incumbent president for the first time in Nigeria’s democratic history. His influence within the APC continued as he served two terms as Governor of Katsina State (2015–2023), where he implemented key policies aimed at infrastructure development, security enhancement, and educational reform.

One of his most defining political moves came in 2022, when he led the charge among APC governors to advocate for a power shift to Southern Nigeria. His efforts ensured the party's adoption of a Southern candidate for the 2023 presidential election, a decision that significantly shaped the country’s political trajectory.

Defender of Democracy and Governance Reformer

As Speaker of the House of Representatives, Masari made history by opposing the controversial third-term agenda proposed during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration. His principled stance played a crucial role in safeguarding the sanctity of Nigeria’s democratic process, reinforcing his reputation as a committed statesman who prioritizes national interest over political ambition.

In recognition of his governance expertise, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Masari as Chairman of TETFund in August 2024, entrusting him with the strategic management of one of Nigeria’s most critical education development institutions. His leadership at TETFund is expected to enhance funding for tertiary institutions and advance educational research and infrastructure across the country.

Recognition of a Legacy in Public Service

The Lifetime Achievement Award conferred on Masari by THISDAY Newspaper/Arise TV serves as a testament to his enduring legacy in public service, governance, and democracy. His career has been marked by a commitment to justice, good governance, and political stability, earning him widespread respect across party lines.

Receiving the award, Masari expressed gratitude to the organizers and reaffirmed his commitment to contributing towards Nigeria’s democratic growth and development.

"This recognition is not just for me but for all those who believe in democracy, good governance, and national unity. Nigeria’s progress depends on leaders who put the country first, and I will continue to serve in any capacity to ensure a better future for our nation," he said.

The 2025 THISDAY Awards ceremony brought together top dignitaries, including political leaders, business executives, and industry stakeholders, all gathered to celebrate outstanding individuals who have made significant impacts in their respective fields.

Masari’s award further cements his position as one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s governance and democratic evolution.
